4 Signs You Should Replace Your Home's Siding

Annie Herrera

Your siding is the face of your home, and damaged siding can bring down its entire appeal. Siding replacement is an opportunity to enhance your home's appearance, save on energy costs, and avoid the risks of damaged siding. Keep an eye out for these four signs you should replace your home's siding.

1. High Energy Bills

Siding is an additional insulative layer for your home that contributes significantly to its energy efficiency. Cracks and gaps in your siding will allow more heat to escape from your home in the winter or enter your home in the summer. This, in turn, increases the strain on your heating and cooling system and uses more energy. Investing in siding replacement now helps you avoid dealing with excessive energy costs to keep your home comfortable.

2. Water Damage

Modern siding is very durable, but it still undergoes wear and tear due to exposure to the elements. Moisture that seeps into your siding may cause it to bubble and blister, or it may form cracks in your siding as it freezes and expands.

Moisture intrusion attacks your siding by causing it to rot or promoting mold and mildew growth. If left untreated, these problems can spread beneath your siding and into your house's frame. Siding replacement ensures the complete removal of mold and rot that may compromise your home's structure.

3. Fading

In addition to water damage, fading is a constant threat to your siding that you should be aware of. Siding primarily fades due to UV exposure from sunlight. Vinyl siding is also vulnerable to oxidation, which causes fading. Vinyl siding with oxidation problems is brittle and may have a layer of chalk-like dust on its surface.

Faded siding needs frequent repainting and maintenance. Instead of continuing to pay for repainting, consider replacing your siding for a fresh look with significantly lower maintenance demands.

4. Missing Panels

Missing siding panels are a huge blow to your home's curb appeal, but the problems don't end here. Siding panels are installed with an interlocking design, where each panel is supported by adjacent panels. Siding panels around the gap left by a missing panel are more prone to sagging and moisture intrusion. Neglecting to replace missing sections promptly may lead other panels to fall as well.

Siding damage isn't too difficult to spot, but it can also be easy to overlook if you aren't careful. Every house will need updated siding eventually, so keep an eye out for these siding issues on your own home.
